Who will succeed Mika AHOLA (SF-HM)? The outgoing champion seems today best placed to claim a second world crown in the small-engine class. HM Honda rider spent the winter in Spain, at Girona, to perfect his preparation. Confident, Ahola is convinced that in spite of Cervantes departure for E3, the adversity will not miss: "I think Albergoni is very determined to win since he took Cervantes' place at KTM, and his Finnish team mate Eero Remes will be very fast for sure if the races will be easier. If Yamaha rider Marc Germain will get his act together like he did for the last two rounds of the WEC last year, he will be a major threat. The biggest question mark remains on Husqvarna´s Antoine Meo, a newcomer on E1. He is maybe the fastest of my rivals but can he cope on all kind of terrains, enduro tests and difficult races? I am afraid he has trained hard during the winter.”
In a few words Mika Ahola summarizes the stakes of E1 perfectly. Behind him it will be also a match France Italy that will be disputed. For the Squadra Azura, Maurizio MICHELUZ (ITA-TM) still convalescent will not take the start of the event. The Italians will rely on the Junior world champion Thomas OLDRATI (ITA-KTM). On French side, one will count on Marc BOURGEOIS (FRA-HVA), Fabien PLANET (FRA-KTM), Jordan CURVALLE (FRA-SHE), Julien GAUTHIER (FRA-HM) and Nicolas PAGANON (FRA-KAW). Perhaps he was frightened, but Spanish Xavi GALINDO (ESP-KTM) tardily decided to leave E3 for E1. The category will also be animated by the fast Jari MATTILA (SF-SUZ), engaged this year on a Suzuki.
