We could develop during hours the stakes of the duel awaited between Juha SALMINEN (SF-BMW), new official BMW and his substitute at KTM, Johnny AUBERT (FRA-KTM), reigning world champion. But the first Portuguese special tests will say much more than of long discourse. The challenge is announced hard for the two men who will start from a white page. At BMW, secret reigns. It is just known that Salminen would have brought in his new employer some of the technical solutions used before at KTM. For his French adversary, the adaptation to a new machine was done quickly: “Everyone talked to me about specificities of the suspensions, and finally I had more difficulties of accustoming me to the engine. I used to take corners on the third gear with a Yamaha, now it is necessary that I think before each turn of retrogressing a speed moreover. Compared to a Japanese bike, it is necessary also to position more on the back to have more traction. However I find my machine sharper and less tiring than my preceding motor bike. ”
Behind the two heavyweights of the championship, the category is still exciting. On the third walk of the podium in 2008, Alessandro BELOMETTI (ITA-KTM) has experience and versatility. But with more than 35 years, the Italian will have to fight, in particular against his favourite adversary, Rodrig THAIN (FRA-TM). The young guard will be represented by Joakim LJUNGGREN (SWE-HSB) and Cristobal GUERRERO (ESP-YAM). Following the example of BMW, also defended by Simo KIRSSI (SF-BMW) and KTM, Husqvarna bet on Enduro 2 with a Bartosz OBLUCKI (POL-HVA) re-motivated by his 250 cc 2 strokes, and the new gamble of the manager Fabrizio Azzalin incarnated by the Finnish crossman Matti SEISTOLA (FIN-HVA), coming from MX2. Cristian BEGGI (ITA-YAM) is also coming from the motocross circuits. The world vice-champion of MX3 will ride on a Yamaha of the Team Racing Project. Note that Antoine LETELLIER (FRA-APR) moves in Enduro 2 where he becomes the only ambassador of the Aprilia factory in Grand Prix.
